Ancestor Faces

These abstract faces composed of eyes and brow recur in megalithic stone art throughout Europe
and in northern Africa, as well as neolithic Balkan ceramics and other instances.

folkton drum of limestone, Britain Second Folkton Drum
You're looking at the Folkton Drums from Yorkshire, northern England, carved from limestone with incised patterns. The butterfly-like patterns here are repeated with a butterfly on the opposite side, complete with wings, body and antennae.
This one repeats the face and butterfly theme, with a doubled concentric circle added that recalls the eye-like patterns incised on megaliths, bone objects, and ceramics around neolithic Europe, from Spain to Ireland to Denmark.
