Female Statue-Menhirs of Europe
These monumental women are carved in relief
with necklaces, breasts, belts and abstract faces.
They are found over much of Europe toward
the end of the neolithic era. They are the oldest
large statues on the continent. In some regions
most or all statue-menhirs
are female, in others
they are both male and female, and in a few places
where they date to the early bronze age,
are overwhelmingly male.
